LATEST NEWS ABOUT MTBE

MTBE is a toxic substance that is not biodegradable in water. Many aquifers of water supplies are being polluted with this chemical. Recently, authorities decided to close many of them as a source of drinking water and even for agricultural use. The main reason we find substantial amounts of MTBE in underground water, is that in an effort to reduce hydrocarbon pollutants from vehicle exhaust emissions, a 2% by weight (about 15% by content) oxygenate has been mandated by the U.S. Government to be added to Reformulated Gasoline. As a result of the pollution created by MTBE several States, among them California, this year decided to ban the use of MTBE in gasoline as a pollution reducer.

Many other countries are now following suit.

The efficiency of MTBE is also in question as smog exhaust reducer and has been proven effective only in reducing Carbon Monoxide, but only on older cars. MTBE added to gasoline has no effect in cleaning the fuel. It doesn't eliminate impurities major source of pollutant emissions. We have the formulation to answer these situations either at the refinery or at the distribution level. Results of testing any fuel, with or without ProTec’s catalysts, can vary considerably. As with MTBE or any other treatment, it is important that a trial test be conducted by the Research & Development Laboratory of each refinery or fuel distributor interested in producing the highest possible grade and cleanest finished products (Fuel oil, Bunker C, Diesel, Gasoline).
